Dia de Los Muertos Video Countdown

The Day of the Dead (or Dia de los Muertos) is probably the most colorful, fascinating and mysterious Mexican holiday that no one understands. Most of you probably think it’s just a Mexican spin-off of Halloween and everyone gets lazy and copies each other’s makeup. That’s not true. Nobody thinks that. Dia de los Muertos is the time of the year when Mexicans, including myself, remember the people who were taken by La Santa Muerte (aka dead people). People we love, though. As a child, my mother always took me to the marketplace to buy pan de muerto (bread of the dead), marigold flowers and sugar skulls to decorate our altar. It was a small table set up with pictures and old belongings of our ancestors and deceased friends, surrounded by candles and other paraphernalia. It’s not creepy at all, y’all. I promise.

If you live on a border state in the U.S. (CA, NV, AZ, NM, TX and even FL) you can probably find Dia de los Muertos carnivals, exhibitions, and themed parties in the larger cities. I’m sure those of you bougie people in the East Coast can find something too. Look around! For those of you in other countries, you don’t need to purchase the bread, or the flowers, or the sugar skulls to partake in the festivities. Make your own altar and decorate it however you want! It’s not about imitating, it’s about joining the celebration in spirit and taking a day to remember those who have transcended.

Dirty Cult would like to celebrate Dia de los Muertos with a video countdown of artists who passed away after giving the world some of the most memorable songs we will ever know. These songs were selected to highlight some of the biggest moments in their careers. Some are sad, some are gay.
